Active Engagement

What is Active Engagement?

Active engagement includes anything students do to actively participate or interact with their learning and/or materials; this contrasts with passively listening to a lecture or video or watching a person model or do instruction.

Active engagement will look different depending on the age, lesson, content, and teacher style - but the main thing to grasp about active engagement is that students are actively participating in or interacting with their learning - this might be through responding, using a variety of materials, small/large group discussions - it can vary greatly.

Why Increase Active Engagement?

Students are more likely to exhibit positive behavior when they are engaged in their learning. It also allows them to directly manipulate and utilize the information that is presented to them, allowing for increased comprehension and retention of content.
