Effective classwide positive behavioral support systems are essential if students are to achieve their highest potential. Three key areas will need to be addressed. When all five basic human needs are met, misbehavior is likely to be at very low levels. Teachers must master nine key skills to be able to support positive behaviors. Teachers with an authoritative teaching style are best suited to maintain high productivity and a positive classroom. Classwide systems should be considered before individual support plans so that many students may benefit and the least intrusive techniques are selected. When students need Time Away to reflect on their behavior and develop better coping systems, this should be available. Peers can be used to support individual students, in a Pit Crew program.
