Mental Health and Behavior

Students with behavior problems and mental health issues present a challenge. These individuals will require treatment for long-range triggers and predictors of behavior (e.g., parent in prison; orphaned at early age; student has been abused; student has a mental illness, etc.). School counseling, referral to community agencies, and other interventions are likely to be necessary to address these issues.

However, a student with mental health problems may also have behavioral issues requiring a behavior support plan to address immediate or immediate past triggers or predictors of problem behavior (e.g., teacher handing the student a long assignment, a peer making a negative remark, missing the bus this morning). Understanding how to address both long-range issues and immediate predictors requires staff accountability and coordination with a designated case manager coordinating communication. Behavior support plans are not designed to remediate mental health issues. Rather, they specify how students challenged by mental health factors will be supported in an educated environment.
